My latest acquisition to the "box of cameras" . A mint condition Sony Mavica MVC-FD75. A big clunker, eh? Given to me by a friend who bought it new-only has about 100 exposures on it. Sample taken with it. All settings as the camera did 'em. Not bad for a 0.35(!) mp camera! The old critter seems to have an outstanding lens with a zoom range of 4.2-42mm (40-400mm 35mm equiv). Thanks for looking Roy

Nice and with a 10x optical zoom too. My poor Kodak only has a 3x zoom.

My fire department has one of those. They recently got a Vivitar waterproof camera, so maybe they will be disposing of the Sony. Before memory cards were the norm, recording right to a floppy was considered state of the art. But you can only do so much with 1.44 mb.

Roy,
"The old critter seems to have an outstanding lens with a zoom range of 4.2-42mm (40-400mm 35mm equiv)."
I thought the most common conversion from 35mm to digital was x1.5 with some minor variations. That would make the lens 6.3-63mm. 40-400mm is quite remarkable. Outstanding. Fabulous.
Where am I going wrong?

My Minolta digital has a focal length of around 3mm which is equivalent to 35mm camera having a focal length of 28mm. Massive factor due to the very small size of the sensor. Much smaller than APS-C.

There are several chip sizes on digital cameras, e.g my Panasonics:
Panasonic FZ1 lens: 4.6-55.2mm: 35mm equivalent 35-420mm: chip size 4.5 x3.3 mm - 12x zoom, 7.6 crop factor
Panasonic FZ20 lens: 6-72mm: 35mm equivalent: 36-432: chip size 5.8 x 4.25mm - 12x zoom, 6 crop factor
(if my calculations are correct.)
I think the chip size on some of the camcorders was even smaller.

Thank you.
There is always something to be learned here.
Now lessee. The crop from which your potato comes determines the size of the chips. The smaller the chip the bigger the crop and when you factor in the equivalent sensor zoom x12 you get even smaller digital cameras. (If my calculations are correct.)
Salt and vinegar anyone?
I need a slide rule.

Ah, the potato. Possibly the best thing to come out of the Americas....and the reason there are so many Irish in the Americas: full circle, sort of.

Ah, the potato. Possibly the best thing to come out of the Americas....and the reason there are so many Irish in the Americas: full circle, sort of. Indeed. Where would fish and chips be without it? And where would English newspapers be without the increased circulation necessary to contain the fish and chips. That they no longer have such a useful purpose is probably the cause of their present decline. Mickey

Mo gave me a new computer for my b-day, and I kept the old Gateway just for my Mavica. Thinking about pulling the 3.5 drive and putting it in the new one. Will have to research to see if it is compatible, and wait 'til the warranty is up on the new 'puter.
