I bought an external floppy drive with a USB lead a few years back so I will always have compatibility - as long as USB is being used. I'm not sure that I've used it more than a couple of times.
I just need to sort out yhe old twin 51/4 drive and the 30mb RLL hard drive and I've got everything covered (unless someone gives me a 15inch 10mb Winchester drive).

Hey Dave, How about cassette tapes . Some cam-corders and computers used them. So many possibilities!! The Mavica FD200 had floppy disk storage, and a memory stick slot. I would bet that it's possible to build an entire collection around these things. They sure made a lot of them. Doug

Plenty of tape recorders lying round, reel-to-reel and cassette. I remember the good old days of it taking five or more minutes to load a simple programme. I did have a computer with a tape back-up: totally useless. Tape in camcorders was okay: then digital recording to tape came in and they were more than okay, saving to uncompressed .avi files.

I had a Sinclair once. If I remember correctly, it wasn't much bigger than todays little laptops. I had fun with it, but it was indeed worthless Doug

... I need a slide rule ... I always have one handy hanging on the wall in case of power failure. Haven't worked out how to process pictures with it yet. As you say, there's always something waiting to be learnt.

My father bought a Sinclair ZX81 (I think 81 rather than 80). £99 . It must have had about 1K of memory. Unfortunately when it arrived it wasn't working. It turned out to be a power supply fault. I fixed it, but he decided not to keep it, so I "de-fixed" it and it was sent back. His £99 was immediately refunded, followed a month later by another £99. I swear if he hadn't owned up they would still be sending us £99 a month even now, over thirty years on!
I don't know where my slide rule is.

I decided not to mess with the floppy drive in the old Gateway. There's no reason to do so, because new external USB floppy drives are selling for $14.99 on EBay with free shipping!
