Somehow The North American Ice Boating Championship Regatta is being held near here on Lake Superior. The local paper says there are over 50 competitors including European ones. It was a good excuse to try and get a few photos. It turns out that you had to walk about a mile or more off shore, hard to tell distance on open ice, to get near the start line. No problem that, except that it is on glare ice. It was like walking across an ice hockey rink in your hiking boots for several miles. Anyway you get the idea, fun. I should also say that the ice which appeared to be about a couple of feet thick was making noises the whole time like a metal drum popping out a dent and cracking. I guess waves under the ice will do that but it is disconcerting if you are not used to it. Apologies for the white balance, still struggling with that. I don't think you would catch me out there with the ice booming.
