You can put an EF lens on to an EF-S body, which will result in using the center portion of the lens as opposed to using the entire area for a FF body.
But, like you said, not sure why one would want to put a DX/EF-S lens on a FF body, makes no sense. Even though you can on the Nikon side, it really makes no sense.

What you fellas have been saying about putting on DX lenses on a FF camera and having low MP photos as a result has been true up till the Nikon D800 is introduced. You are going to still get a pretty good MP count with auto crop to DX on a 36 MP FF camera using DX lenses. Just why you would want to do that is anybody's guess.

With a DX lens on the D800 you can get 15.4MP (4800 x 3200), it is still pretty good, but not near as much as the full 36.

That is quite true but the point is that I have both a D700 and a D300 and am satisfied for my needs at what they produce at 12 MP. You are not now stuck with a 5 MP in auto crop mode. Pretty amazing but not not enough for me to run out and get a D800. It is good for Pros like Jim Brandenburg who routinely makes 40 inch prints which sell for big money. For most amateurs not really a must have.
