Dave:
NX2 (or the earlier NX) will process conventional files, too, but can't do as much with them because jpegs and tiffs don't have as much image information as Nef files. Actually, I only use NX2 to fine tune exposure--exposure, highlights, shadows, and remove spots. If I plan to do serious image modification, I switch to Photoshop Elements. NX2 can do that stuff but I don't care for the way the interface works for those tasks. It's very non intuitive.

Yes NX2 is only for Nikon Raw/NEFF files and like Wayne said TIFFs and JPEGS also. I think it does a better job at converting NEFF files so I use it to do everything and keep PSE for my wife's use. I persevered with NX2's interface preferring to use only one PP program. I get confused easily. I think that a manufacturer's RAW converter may be better at conversions than say PSE. Again, just a feeling I have.

Thanks both.
Canon has changed its own RAW converter for CR2 files. The latest, that came with the 7D is much better than that issued with the 30D. I presume it is backwardly compatible with older CR2, but I haven't tried. The trouble is that it is too slow on an average computer when there are umpteen (i.e hundreds) files to do. For a time I combined RAW + jpg in camera, but it doesn't let you take a long enough burst.
That is why I like about that little conversion programme. I can shoot in RAW and do a conversion rapidly - very rapidly - and then decide which I want to do 'properly'.
John, sorry missed your post earlier, with it being on page 1. We have witnessed the occasional fell run. All I can say is that if I wanted to get down as quick as the runners, I wouldn't have gone up in the first place. I think 'ha' was probably the right reply.

Here is some food for thought. I read somewhere that when you open a file in Nikon NX View that you are seeing a JPEG even though you shot in RAW/NEFF. I think this goes for the in camera review too, the camera's processor not having enough power to display a NEFF.That makes sense to me as when I view NEFF files this way they come up quickly and then I can select RAW which then loads the NEFF. There is supposed to be software that will let you pull the JPEG from the RAW file. If this can be done then there is no reason to shoot JPEG+RAW.

Bob, yes....but....and no, but mainly yes. If I can explain. It seems (as far as I can tell) that the raw file has an embedded jpg and it is this that the small programme is accessing. This is probably why it is so quick at producing the end result as opposed to the true RAW converter. The problem, though, comes if the picture has been shot in RAW and the computer, on which the files are being loaded, does not make the RAW files visible to the viewer. I used to shoot RAW+jpg for this reason. Now I just shoot RAW without the problem - as long as I have the right computer with me. Dave.
