Hi again! Here are some more oddball pumpkins. I've yet to find "The Great Pumpkin" though This one is called an "Ugly Pumpkin", and looks as though it has peanuts pasted on it, but really does grow this way! This one weighs 700 lbs. (2000+Kgs.), and was grown locally by a 10 year old girl. They give prizes for the largest pumpkins grown. Visitors to the farm are invited to sign this one. Doug

Doug,
As you say, they are peanuts stuck on: a Jimmy Carter invention perhaps.
On the subject of peanuts, have you had groundnut soup? We had some in The Gambia and it was one of the nicest soups I have had. In fact eating out there is surprisingly good: it's the Lebanese influence.
Girls with big pumpkins? Surely a perfect case of double entendre.
Dave.

Dave, I hadn't noticed, but you're right! There are also a lot of farmers daughters who grow these big pumpkins I've had Lebanese cooking, and it is quite good. I'll look up the recipe for the soup, Barb loves making them. She made us a Butternut squash soup just yesterday. Doug

Doug,
We do butternut squash soup from time to time: very nice but quite a distinctive and strong flavour and not a soup I would want too often.

I cooked a small pumpkin yesterday. Nuked it in the microwave for 24 minutes and then smoothed it out with a potato masher. So easy.
It is, after all, just a gaudy squash. Nice flavour but I did add a little sweetener.
I used to salt and dry the seeds but that is too much bother.

Hi Mickey, Barb ,my expert in all things edible , informs me that the difference between a squash and a gourd is that a squash can be eaten. She nukes our squash as well, then adds maple syrup as a sweetener. We save the seeds for the next year. Doug
