It sounds similar to the messy black goo I found in the shutter mechanism of a mid-1930s Robot.
I eventually identified it as a moybdenum disulphide compound, popular some years ago as an additive to the oil in car engines to reduce friction.
The makers claimed it lasted three oil changes because it "clung to the metal".
I'll believe them. It took me ages and ages, wash after wash with solvent, to get rid of it.
