I shot these photos in either 1960 0r '61 in Astoria, Oregon, at the mouth of the Columbia River. The first shot is up a freighter picking up a pilto to go upriver about 100 miles to Portland, Oregon. The second shot is of the "Mothball Fleet" that was there at that time--scores of landing craft and Liberty Ships stored there since the second world war. I think the ships in the photo are LSTs (landing craft). When I came back to the area 10 years later all the ships were gone. Photos were shot with my first 35mm camera--an Ansco Super Memar (aka Agfa). I still have the camera. Wayne

Those old LSTs and Liberty ships would have had a story to tell. I remember seeing the film PT 109, JFK's MTB, which did tell its story. I always wondered how factually accurate it was: it did seem as though it might be.

We went up river to Portland around 1970 to take part in the Rose Festival and I don't recall seeing any moth balled ships then either. It was an enjoyable run up river and a good time in Portland.
