My Speed Graphic has only one screw holding each spring to the camera body which is wood.

I had a really odd idea in my head, and I'm wondering if it might work. The roll film back fits very nicely into the camera when the spring back is removed. There are large flat surfaces on both sides of the camera. Suppose I cleaned both the camera and the holder carefully, and used a bit of silicone cement. Because the joint would be accessible from the side, a careful insertion of a thin blade would allow one to remove the back if necessary but it would likely be enough to hold the back on the camera for normal use.
Is there any reason I shouldn't do that?

Is there any reason I shouldn't do that? YES. It sounds too easy and sensible to be good. Aren't DIY'ers supposed to use duct tape, chewing gum and bent paper clips? Mickey P.S. Will the thickness of the silicone alter the focus?

You could cement a pair of thin rails to the sides. If the fit is snug enough, it should slide in and out fairly well, and be light proof. Make the rails as wide as you can. Super glue works wanders.

One tap with a chisel at the junction usually does, otherwise, use some acetone.

Might. I need to think about that.

This week, I made two metal clips, drilled some holes and tightened them down with the spring screws. Seems to be OK. I'll have a go at it this weekend.
