I was just thinking that we are devoted primarily to the pursuit of collecting and cherishing classic and vintage cameras of all types. Other sites have photo galleries that are generally used to display photographs, as well as cameras but to a much lesser extent.
I was wondering whether a Member's Gallery of the Cameras in their collections would be a good idea. I would suggest that it consist of up to 5 featured cameras which could changed over time and include historical comments.

David,
I like your idea and I would be willing to participate.
Exactly what information besides historical comments would you like to see?

Someone had mentioned collector's software recently in a posting here. I haven't seen any but I assume that there is a standard format, some of which is not relevant here like price paid, etc. However, if a gallery is to be of value to collectors, then some kind of uniform format would be important. I see it as a technical resource. It should include dates of production, company, designer, historical notes including interesting provenance, etc. I thought about comments that would be attracted but I'm not sure about that personally as to including such in the gallery. I believe that comments can be forwarded to the owner of the particular camera/lens/accessory to be included at the member's discretion. This could be in the form of a link to postings on the board.
Generally, I would propose that it be a resource for others, the unreformed camera collectors lurking out there.
I'm sort of running ahead of my brain here, sorry. My first web site, The Tomei Collection (love that name, huh?), was systematically ruined by Google and the new site is being constructed with the help of a fellow who knows web site design. However, that site will not be ready until some time after I complete chemo in the fall.
I confess to being clueless about what this gallery would entail as far as implementation.

David,
" It should include dates of production, company, designer, historical notes including interesting provenance, etc."
I still like your idea but as an 80 year old there are too many things I still want to do before the sun sets below the horizon. If and until I am confined to a wheelchair I cannot envision myself spending the necessary hours and days chasing up all that information. Whatever is available in McKeown's and that, probably in truncated form, if acceptable under the yet to be formulated rules, would generally have to suffice from me.

Don't let my details dissuade anyone. A Members' Gallery would have to be acceptable to everyone and if images of featured cameras in a collection are accompanied by further data is up to the member. Perhaps it would be nice to just have a Gallery of cameras available for members to display their collection and anything further would be up to the member. A data sheet that could accompany the image upload doesn't have to be filled out.
After spending the last year in a wheelchair, I have become rather too fastidious. I would just like to see the cameras in other collections belonging to members without having to launch a separate posting on a board. I have quite a few cameras that I would like to share and also get further information.
I don't believe that there are other open membership sites that include such a camera gallery. Let's just make it simple. Of course, I'm speaking just as a member of The Camera Collector since a gallery would mean more work for those responsible for this site.

As I have decided to collect Ricoh compact cameras, both rangefinders and point & shoot, I will set up a dedicated site for this soon (rikenon.com).
I would of course contribute to the camera collector also. As a beginner collector I start with only two cameras, but at the end of the year I will have a lot more.
One could also start a camera member gallery in a modest way, growing into something greater as times goes by?

Why not include links to members camera collections on The Camera Collector site, in a gallery section. Then, one can share links and also create content.

Truls, with all due respect, this is a message board. There is no facility for galleries. We have a links page, and if you have a website I can add the URL to the list.

Randy, I know. But if some members don't have or not are able to get a website yet still want to show their cameras, it could be done here on camera collector, i.e. in a message board intended for such usage. Don't shoot the messenger but the message

casualcollector: Very nice site and collection. I am impressed you collect so many different brands. The layout and information is most easy to navigate and read.
