I love the winter. From my office window, 28 November 2013. The old crabapple tree. Mickey

Sorry, Mickey As much as I enjoy winter, there is something neat about walking outside and picking a ripe tomato! Taken just about 20 minutes ago (@2:20 PM 11/29/13) Just couldn't resist! Roy

Not much of a winter person. No snow yet and unusually snow that falls isn't on the ground more than a week at a time. I absolutely could not live where the snow comes in November and doesn't leave until March or April.

I absolutely could not live where the snow comes in November and doesn't leave until March or April. Wayne, Sure you could. By the end of November you become numb. Meanwhile you are wrapped in such elegant things as lambs' wool and cashmere and silk and soft supple elk leather and seal skins. The numbness lasts till mid April. Then you get really uncomfortable and start sweating and also perspiring at the same time and dripping and feeding mosquitoes and itching and scratching. You strip off all the clothes the law will allow and resign yourself to being miserable till the leaves fall once again. To quote that famous aviator. "HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE " Mickey

We haven't had any snow yet, although we're three weeks past the time of an expected first fall, and so far only one night below zero C. Last week we cleared the tomato plants, harvesting what was left, 2 kg of tiny green things that we minced and turned into into chutney.

Well, Mickey, Mother nature nailed me for being a smart alec about my tomatoes Several days of sub-freezing temps Barely reaching 32f during the day, have put paid to the fresh tomatoes, despite covering, and running an incandescent bulb under the cover. Just wait 'til next year! Roy

Roy,
Years ago the Niagara grape growers had just such a problem - premature frosts ruined their wine grapes. Never daunted some of them decided to crush the unhappy grapes and see what, if anything, could be done. What they came up with was the now world famous "Wine Vintage. It is a very expensive wine. I only tasted it once. I prefer a dry wine but this sweet wine topped everything. Since then the growers can't wait for that important frost every year.
Just think, Roy, Ice Tomato Ketchup. It could revolutionize the tomato industry.
Or, at least provide a BL frozen T sandwich on toast. Hold the Mayo.

The Romans apparently had "ice wine" and people seem to have been rediscovering it ever since. The Germans (Austrians too?) have always been big in "eiswein" - certainly I've always known it by the German name. We've got a bottle of it somewhere.

Which must have been the first case of industrial espionage. Spying on their Canadian friends. No more maple syrup for them. I hear Caesar got stabbed in the rotunda. That must have hurt. It was fatal. Probably caught spying on Brutus and Cleopatra. Mickey
