The MD lenses came out in the late 70s with the XD 11 and allowed for the auto mode (and shutter preferred AE if Minolta offered a camera with that option, too early in the morning for me to remember). They also were built "lighter" which was meant to allow the aperture blades to stop down quicker and work better with AE cameras.
Ron is correct, the MC lenses do work with all Minolta cameras. The only limitation is that they will not work in the Auto modes on the XD11 and X700.

Paul,
Just noticed your reference quote from Tolkien.
Are you a hobbit...and know Bilbo and Frodo and all the others? I have a set of his hobbit tales.

I really enjoy Tolkien! I have a couple of sets of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, including a really nice leather-bound set I got for Christmas a few years back! Was delighted the movie trilogy was kept so close to the books! That doesn't usually happen. ;D
