I try to keep my small collection working 100% and to use the cameras. Now I will have to start selling or giving away a few, because She who Must Be Obeyed is starting to complain about space... I'm selling those that don't fit in with my collection for the same reason. I want S.W.M.B.O to visit another member here who's home I have visited. Seeing his collection would put into perspective my puny collection of only 70 cameras and a dozen or so lenses.

I would post pictures of my collection but upon seeing them SWMBO might panic and force you to quit collecting. That would be tragic. Mickey

Your collection would be fine Mickey - it's not mine you see. I've seen how many handbags she's got tucked away, she thinks I don't notice when she brings one out and uses it.

Interesting views on this topic, I could agree on all statements. There are different kind of collectors also, as in the rest of the population.
I also like fully working cameras, and to shoot with them. It could be later on, when I get a proper collection, that I only want to display those cameras, then it may not be important working or not. On the other hand keeping them alive could mean greater value.
genazzano said something important: Camera collecting is not about showing prosperity, but the chase and thrill of the great bargain, I could not agree more on this statement.
Patina on cameras makes for a great collectible, it show the camera has been used as it was ment to, makes a gret piece of history.
Fun stories, thank you! Collectors are different, and theres is room for all of us. Luckily I have a loving and caring wife, she encourage me to collect. Since I bought her a camera and some lenses she also shows interest whenever a camera arrive in the mail..

I'm more into the lenses rather than the cameras, I love to use old lenses on my Sony A6000, and sometimes on a Pentax K10. I think I have close to 200 lenses now, and of course many of those came with cameras, I guess there's 50 or 60 - most on display. I think that most work, and some of the rangefinders and probably all of the SLR's have had a film through them. It's the older folders that I haven't tried. I try to buy decent looking stuff, especially the lenses ( I avoid badly fungused lenses and dented filter rings if possible ) but I will buy a dead camera if it comes with lenses that I'd like. I've been lucky that the few dead ones have usually been easy to repair. I think there's a few dead ones in a box somewhere, but nothing special that I would spend money on getting fixed.

Generally, I prefer them working, or just needing new seals. But will not part with SLRs previously used whatever condition they are now in. I am not bothered about TTL meters though. I have bought a very dead Exakta VP with case for £10, just to be able to hold something from the beginning of miniature photography and have bought a few ebay cameras wh ich prooved to be faulty, but cleared most of them.

Canada's Snowbirds. Trying to miss the CN Tower. Taken with my feet planted firmly on the deck of my son's yacht in Lake Ontario. Snowbird at rest. The Ambertor. My photographic platform. Mickey

im just a poor boy going to start with some non workings for display, not spending to much money on them i hope, and then try to restore the cosmetics. When that kind of restoration goes good, ill buy some working cameras maybe is the prices are not to high. But at this moment the money is the biggest problem (as for about everyone i think)

Concerning money: spot on Koen. One can have the finest collection if there is plenty $ (or €), but you will certainly miss the thrill of finding and chasing old cameras!
Mickey, I prefer a tripod... your platform wobbles too much.

But at this moment the money is the biggest problem (as for about everyone i think) That is exactly how I started. I am still cash conscious. After a short while I found that I enjoyed cosmetic and simple mechanical repairs and restoration more than any other aspect of collecting. That still holds true. Mickey

Modestly, Mickey Seriously though. A tripod on any vessel smaller than The Titanic is worse than useless. M.O.

Phil, a girl can't have too many hand bags or pairs of shoes Handbags, shoes. What else? I am not a woman yet I have more camera bags and camera cases than is decent. I don't know where they all come from. I have not purchased or swiped them. They are a space stealing, dust collecting nuisance. It breaks my heart to think of all the beautiful animals that died to make those things. Cows, horses, pigs, alligators, snakes, vinyls, naugas, seals, synths, patents, ostriches, simulates - a veritable menagerie destroyed for naught. Sniff. Sniff. Still, some of them may very well have heroically saved the lives of their contents. Don't mind me. it's these darned pills. They rattle when I walk. Mickey

I gave 5 big cases to a charity shop the other day. That may help.
