Last Wednesday, the town I live in had 180mm of rain in 24 hours - the highest the region has ever recorded. This was my driveway in the afternoon. By 8.30 in the evening, the water was nearly up to the back door. We evacuated ourselves to my brother's place (he lives on a hill). Next morning I drove back down to the house, through the floodwaters, and waded down the path. The tide mark is where the water reached. The water had soaked the carpet, and the bottom plates of the walls. Luckily, the house is on a concrete slab, so the floor is ok. The floodwater was contaminated with sewage, so the carpet had to go - we ripped it up yesterday. All of the walls need to be opened up to dry, so there is a big repair job ahead. We have rented a small apartment, and will move into that until the job is finished. Luckily, our insurance will cover all this.

Well, the builder has already started, ripping out the house interior. It makes things easier that he is another of my brothers.

I'm finally back on the internet - we have shifted to an apartment in town while the house is repaired, and it's taken a month to get the phone connected. The apartment is the upper floor of the middle unit here: The building is a terrace of 3 town houses, around 110 years old. They have all been converted to apartments. The street is 1 block from Dunedin's main street, behind the town's only shopping mall. From the bay window, we have a view of this fine old house:

The builder is supposed to finish the repairs soon, and once the floorings are replaced, we can move back to our house.

Well, we moved back into our house last week. The inside mainly looks the same, but the bathroom and kitchen have been renovated. Now we're trying to fit everything back in......
