Guess I'm just an idiot, I just like to collect something I've always had an interest in, Cameras, I also thought it might be nice to meet other like minded people and maybe get some research information on some of the 1500 cameras in my collection Trouble is I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack and have only just been introduced to the world of computers and know little to nothing about them.. I'm in a remote area and access to the net at reasonable cost and speed has not been available for that long Has taken me almost an hour to register here and finally find a way to type in this intro... just makes me feel dumber... not even sure when I press enter that this won't all just disappear as much of what I try to send does Anyhow, thats about me.. an old guy.. thick as a brick and like collecting and using cameras.. if this works and I can manage to understand how I will be back looking for info on some items Cheers... Bob

Welcome Bob, to the CC community! With 1500 cameras you have to live in a rural area, it takes some space... Publish your questions and we all will try to get you some answers - and send some pics as well. (Even posting pics on this site can be learned, although it is not trivial:-) Hans

I do hope I can learn to post pics as well. I have problems finding info especially on the very common nothing type cameras Its easy enough to get shutter speed and aperture info etc. straight from the camera but I like to also find info such as release dates.. price at time of release etc. and all that seems to be recorded for older rarer cameras more then the simple focus free and self focusing ones such as all the Pentax Espios etc. I use Camerapedia and few similar sites but there must be more out there but being new to computers I have trouble finding things Oh and yes.. displaying this number of cameras is difficult I only have a little over half on display at the moment Sorry if my times are off.. I'm in Australia and times for rest of the world are always off

Welcome and we will forgo the jokes about "do the cameras operate upside down".......That's a large collection, and it is nice with even more common items to collect the instructions, sales receipts, old films and accessories for the cameras.

Thanks Stephen. your right, I do have instructions for many and films for most also flash bulbs etc. probably only 2 or 3 though where I have found original receipts though. I do my best though to take at least 1 picture with each camera, as much as a test as anything else Always thought a collection should have the common items from the day as much as those which are nostalgic.. exciting... or just plain beautiful

Just wanted to welcome a fellow camera collector. Sounds like we're similar, I'm in a smaller remote location, have quite a few cameras (2200 before I started downsizing about 6 months ago) and am not a Bill Gates by anyone's estimate. Glad to have you here. Let's see some pics when you get a chance.

Guess I'm just too much of an idiot, I cant work out how to start a thread and add pics to it, have spent all morning tryingto add pics as attachments (the only way I can work out at all whats being asked for) but seems they are too big to be added that way... maybe time to give up and try something else... thought I could work it out but maybe not.........

My workaround: Upload the pictures to Flickr. Share the pic as Medium Size - i.e. 800xppp (800 pixels wide is best for this forum). Copy the BBCode (no HTML here, that doesn't work). On this board, open a Reply (not a Quick Reply) - it has options for font and colour changes. Paste your BBCode and voila, your picture is there!

It's easy to start a thread, main page, select the section the thread will refer to and go to that area, and there is a start a new thread option, enter title and off you go.
Flikr is not the only option for pictures, they are web based stores for pictures, and you log in after registration, and go for the upload option on, say, Photobucket, which will open a window asking whether you want to drop a picture in by dragging from a file on your computer, or open a panel of files to click on one to upload.
Photobucket then up loads from your file, and then you click on the picture in Photobucket to bring up a screen with several tabs, pick the image one(the middle), and it highlights in yellow and is copied to the "copy" function on windows.
As you write your posting when you want the picture, you "paste" the reference into the text, it looks like a bracket string of letters and numbers.
If you then preview, or post, the string is used to post the picture automatically into the post.
A little pre planning is needed to pick the picture from your camera memory card or hard drive file, and then transfer it to the desktop (easier to keep an eye on it), adjust it via a graphic program the size etc, and then save it back to the desktop, where it can then be sent to Photobucket,or Flickr, etc.
800 pixels wide is the best option, but if you use Photobucket, the file can be any size, as they adjust it for postings automatically.
It will become easy after a couple of goes at it,
Stephen.

Simply put Stephen - but it'll scare the hell out of Bob!
Its not that you're 'stupid' its just that you are a raw beginner. There's a learning curve - We've all been there. I got my first PC in 1997 so I'm pretty good by now, but there's plenty of things I can't get my head round no matter how I try.
Stick to it mate, read the old posts and keep commenting, you can do that at least. New members with new topics keep this forum alive and interesting. When you get the hang of posting photos your input will be even more valuable.
Phil

I found you posts very interesting because of the Espio’s and the prices of cameras. My Son collects Espio’s and when I find them - good ones in cases - anything from $2 to $3 I buy them which means he has more than a few duplicates.
I constantly remind people when comparing cameras that valid comparisons can only be made against what was actually available at the time and pricing.
Several years ago I did some pricing comparisons between the Kodak Retinas and the Espio’s. With pricing a general guide against average weekly income and when some figures are available between disposable income (sometimes discretionary income) these can only be rough guides because certain countries had higher sales tax rates and the USA had lower taxes and a very competitive retail market.
In Australia an average Retina cost 4 to 6 time’s weekly income and up to 20 times disposable income. Fast forward it more than 20 years and the average Espio cost 1 weeks income and 3 weeks disposable income. Different cameras maybe and both representing the difference between the metal heavily engineered cameras and more modern mass manufactured plastic cameras and why fairly sophisticated cameras became more affordable items. Of course if we go back to pre and immediate post war years the top models from Leica and Zeiss were ‘rich folks’ cameras and the average man in the street could not afford them.
A friend recently toured some shops with me and could not believe that top line Canon and Nikon bodies were in the $3000 -$5000 region. I pulled out some old dealer receipts for Nikon FM and FE bodies from the 1980’s and got him to plug the figures into the inflation calculator. Sure enough the results came out at just under the $3000 range which is Nikon Df territory which is positioned in the Nikon digital range at the same pricing and feature point the FMs and FEs were against the F2 and F3.
