The flange to sensor distance (index distance) of Nikon dslr's is to long to be able to use non Nikon mount lenses, it is possible but they won't focus to infinity and the shorter the focal lenght te greater the problem. In the past i've used Nikon 1 and samsung mirrorless bodies to do some lens testing. The problem here being the smaller sensor size so full frame lenses couldn't be used to their full potential. Now with the Nikon Z range everything changed. because of the shallow flange to sensor distance and no mirror in the way of the optical path, just about any make of lens (with the suitable adapter) can be used on the Z cameras. Nikon themselve provide the FTZ adapter wich adapts all Nikon F mount lenses to the Z mount depending on the series all functions of the lenses will work on the Z. Then there's the Techart Canon EF to Z adapter wich is a smart adapter able to maintain AF and other functions of the EF lenses on the Z body. And then there's a whole bunch of "dumb" adapters wich will allow just about any lens on the Z but with limited functionality. Still 10x focus peaking by the touch of a button and peak marking helps A LOT when using manual focus lenses on the Z. At this moment i've got PK,M42,LTM39,FD,C/Y and Leica R adapters. They used to be dirt cheap when ordered from Hong Kong or the US but Belgium import taxes and declaration formalities made them 3 times as expensive. Still if you really need one anything between 30 to 50 Euro's isn't the end of the world.
I'm planning on using the adapters to compare lenses of different makes and different price ranges against each other. Not that i'm gonna buy lenses for that purpose, but there's enough in the collection to keep me busy for a while.
The Z6 is now my lord of the (lens adapter) rings
