NASA Space Shuttle Atlantis launched from the Kennedy Space Center at 7:38pm Friday, June 8th. Here's the launch captured from the Eau Gallie causeway in Indialantic, Florida. Kodacolor 400 color print film, 1/1000 @ f/8, Canon A-1, 500/8 Canon FD mirror lens, tripod. Lessons learned for next time; Get closer, use Kiron 2X7 teleconverter!

What is the approximate distance to the Shuttle? Can you hear the roar?
I remember Sputnik in 1957. I was October and the nights was dark and that small glossy ball was easy to see with the bare eyes.
Thanks for sharing!

About thirty miles. Ten miles further than I thought! The shuttle was out of sight when the sound reached us about two minutes or more after launch. I was near this location for the night launch in December, '06. The initial launch was below my horizon but it lit the sky in spectacular fashion.
