If we could turn the humble Retinette into a $1000 profit on eBay, would our friends think us daft then? Of course not, we would be clever investors! So ever on the look out to make his personal fortune, Paul lets his friends into a small tip "this ones a winner" Its only a slip of paper and it currently stands at under £3. Watch it run .................................... Will I be bidding? Not a chance! Way beyond my means. Just thought I'd introduce you all to the "Investment" side of collecting! Mind you, could fall at the first hurdle ... somebody could make a private offer. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330072846704&fromMakeTrack=trueWell? Anybody agree or disagree with me? Place your bets now before the race starts. I reckon $120. Paul Mind you if you fancy a cardboard box for a few hundred $ search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=reid+camera+box

Well, I had a look Paul, but I'm afraid I don't understand the significance. Come on - what's it all about?

John, There is a current state of "barmy" bidding on almost everything made by Reid, Periflex and Wray. This was a non-working Periflex Gold Star - £113! cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=170065692724&rd=1&rd=1They were never very reliable at the best of times! Really I was just saying to you all - if you have a single page catalogue with Reid stamped on it, then you were on your way to a small fortune. The cameras always now go for £1000+ and almost anything to do with them attracts barmy bidding! I'll eat my hat if this doesn't fetch a pretty penny! The other catalogues that are making silly money now are Practica - I bid on a perfectly ordinary 1980s catalogue - £5 I thought aboutt right - went for £35! Are the "investors" moving into the old camera market? Seems like it. Happened to the car market - bought an 1933 Alvis VPP Speed 20 in 1965 for £100 - could I get my money back? - Not a chance. I accepted £80. Later owner told me he paid £12,000 in the early 70s for it and now they fetch £50,000+ (It was pretty rough, so you have to add in restoration costs) I wasn't too worried at the time as I had just bought a rarer one (a 1934 VDP Coupe) for £45! Not too sure about that Paul. I just won a Praktica VLC on eBay (I've wanted one of them for ages). Not sure if it's a 2 or 3. Sold 'as seen' but also 'in excellent condition', with 3 lenses (one a Pentacon Electric, another a Steinheil zoom) and 3 flashes - for £10, from a seller with 100% positive feedback. It isn't too long ago since I saw them going for £80 - 100, body only.
Now all I have to do is find somebody who's going to London and get them to make a small detour! (Actually my son goes down there fairly regularly).
Now then, Reid... Reid.... Saw something like that somewhere around here....!!
Regards - John

Not quite as much as I forecasted! $75 rather than a $100+ - still not bad for a single sheet.
Shame, I'll just have to invest in Zunow ones - the last made over $300!

Regards - John John, the VLC is a nice camera and uses the same finders as the RTL-1000 Exakta. I bought one a couple of years back for a few dollars because it wasn't working properly. I managed to get the shutter functioning correctly but the meter is gone forever so I don't have to worry about batteries. I'd like to find one with a good meter and otherwise OK too. They take the electric lenses with M42 mount - if the meter is working - but will also work with regular M42 lenses. BTW, if the finder prism is in need of cleaning and it's in the plastic housing, they can be taken apart with a single-edge razor blade and a bit of care. I cleaned one once and glued the housing back together. It works just fine. Walker
