I have been wanting a true Macro lens for the Canon EOS mount. I had read a lot of reviews of the Vivitar/Phoenix 100mm macro so i bid on one. It came and even though the plastic build turned me off the focus was great and every thing seemed fine, until I tried it with the DReb. Older Non-Canon lenses wil give an "Error 99" message when used at any aperture other than the minimum. Works fine with the A2 and the D60 but I wanted it for the DReb. So back it goes for a refund

Dear Rick,
I think by myself, that Canon deserved a big s*@@?! for doing such nice firmware features. Microsoft is now blamed for fighting against Linux/Samba in that way. But everybody seems to accept, that Canon (and partly Nikon) don't allow You to use lenses they don't like You to use.
Especially for macro an adapter to a manual focus lens would alsways be feasible, since one doesn't need infinity focus for macro work. Manual focus is well suited for macro anyway, You just need to be able to direct the camera's shutter speed.
I do understand You, sending an item back, that was promised to work on that camera. But I would send a big bunch of curses to Canon, too.
Best regards Peter

I understand what you are saying and I agree. However, I know and understand the workings of Canon, been with them a long time, that is the reason I bought the D60 as many of the Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron lenses were not reversed engineered. I would not have a problem using it with that camera and my A2 but the seller assured me he had tested it with a 5D and a 30D, and he may have but at minimum aperture, and I do not want people of lesser knowledge getting taken in by this. I have a Sigma 400mm that I bought cheap knowing it would only work at f5.6 with the DReb and I am quite happy with it and the Sigma 500 f4.5 I bought the same way, but I knew ahead of time this was so. I just don't want mis-information beong used to sell lenses

I don't know if it's still the case, but a couple of years ago Sigma would 're-chip' AF lenses for free so they would work on the latest Canon EOS bodies. And I don't know which lenses were involved, but it might be worth checking out.

Gene, that offer is over now. Most Tokina's will work but Sigma is always iffy

I checked with Sigma UK re my 100-300 zoom and they said they couldn't re chip it for myEOS 30 (see my post in Modern SLR's) I have tried said lens on an EOS 30 at a camera fair, and it worked fine! It also worked on a digital Canon. Iss a mystery, init.
