I have an old beat up Ciro-Flex. I have had it for a while. It takes really good pictures, some of my favorites were taken with this camera. It has a light leak problem though. I have just been taping the back up with electrical tape to solve this. Recently I looked through some of the photos I took with it and realized that this camera deserves better! I want to have it lined to stop the light leaks. Do you think it would be possible for me to do this myself? If so then were would someone get flocking material? Also do you think that any camera shop would be able to CLA this camera and if so would you advise it? Here is one of my favorite shots taken with my beat up Ciro-Flex: diggin99.smugmug.com/photos/67082761-M.jpgMany thanks! Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Have a look at the seals. If they are all accessible, you can do it yourself. Do a search for 'light seals' on ebay, and there should be a number of vendors selling materials. You don't normally need a specific kit for the camera (more expensive), just a pack of various seal material. There are plenty of 'how-to' articles on the internet.
Regards - John
ps - you can also lay thick black wool over all the seals - not so permanent but quick!

Nancy,
I think that flocking would present an ongoing problem with its constant shedding. Furthermore, I am not sure that it is dense enough to give a proper light seal.

Nancy, Go to Google and type in "Camera light seals". You will get more information than you could ever want. Mickey

Nancy, do a eBay search for a man named Jon Goodman who goes under the user name Interslice. He has light seal kits that are about the best value for money you can get. For less than $20 you get enough material to reseal quite a few cameras. I have one of his kits and they are wonderful. He even includes a tool to remove the old seals and instructions for many different cameras. Plus he is a very nice guy. He is a member of another forum I (and a few others here) are a member of.

Jon Goodman is a good guy. I just bought my Minolta X-570 from him and he not only gave me a good deal, but he treated me good.

I got a light seal kit from Jon to do the seals on my Nikon FM. I also did a FED 5 andthere's still plenty of material to to my Mamiya C220 and several other cameras. The kit cost less that ten bucks and Jon has all sorts of instructions available. He's a great resource. That's the only way to go IMO.

I recently bought a Canonet 28 in perfect condition except that the light seals were shot (the seller was up front about it). So as soon as I had won the auction I bought a pack of various light seal materials from a seller called Pilgrim18 here in UK. Great selection - I would say enough for about 20 cameras, and extremely reasonable.
Then I looked up 'light seal replacement' on the net. Via a series of links (think Ron Herron may have been involved!) I found Jon Goodman's instruction sets, and among them was the Canonet. Absolutely spot on. I feel a bit guilty for using them, not having bought his stuff, but I would certainly recommend him on the basis of the instructions alone.
Regards - John

I looked up that kit...looks great...plan on getting one! I think the main problem is that the clasp no longer closes all the way...that is why my light leak is mostly on the upper half of the pictures!
Thanks again!
