A guy at work knows I tinker with cameras and gave me a Minolta X-700 that hadn't been used in years to see if I could fix for him. The film advance won't move right now I have been looking for some batteries but the places I have checked so far have been out of the S76. In this camera is a fully charged battery needed for the film advance to work? The camera seems pretty clean, no noticable corrosion like the last camera I talked about here. any Ideas?

Will the film advance lever advance? If it is already advanced and the shutter won't release it could need batteries LR44 should work. These modern Minoltas have capacitor discharge problems. In the case of bad capacitors they will have to be replaced. On the X-700 there are two capacitors, one on top and one on the bottom of the camera. It's not a job for the faint of heart. I've replaced capacitors on a few Minolta XG-1s and I've caused the wallpaper to peel from swearing so much.

Majicman,
I had a problem with a very beautiful, but un-excercised X-700 that the rewind shaft didn't run back. I had to rewind the bottom wheel where the motor axis is attached to. Just try to turn it back in a counter-clock-wise(?) way.
I would however check, whether the metering LED's do light up if pressing the trigger button. If they become dime when pressing it down, then it is a shure sigh of the infamous capacitor problem.
Best regards Peter
PS: The XD-series are better camera's - not w.r.t. quality, but they are that much smoother...

If the shutter is already wound on you won't be able to wind it. Batteries (working!) are required to fire the shutter so fit some before anything else. If the meter works but the shutter doesn't fire, it's likely to be the capacitor problem. Leaving the camera unused for years does not do these capacitors any good either. There is info on the web how to replace them, do a search, I can't remember the address.
