We have a model yacht club that meets in Golden Gate Park. There's usually a few fellows taking their boats out for a jaunt on Spreckels Lake on Tuesdays. Once a year they make a day of it. Everyone shows up and some from out of town, as far as Southern California. I made a point of going to it as a photo assignment. They put a lot of work into these models. I took my Agfa Isolette III, Canon IIIa and OM-2000. Here's a link to the results. I'm going to drop a packet of these pictures off at their club house along with a note of thanks for putting this on. It drew a lot of passers-by. They had a public address system and announced the various models and their owners as each boat was launched. Good weather that day too. If I did it again, I'd show up early and ask members to pose with their craft. www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=6517Michael

Nice pictures of some nice boats, Michael. Those guys must spend hours and hours building them. I particularly like the informal shots where the owners are chatting. They make these guys' hobby come alive. They probably knew you were taking the pictures, but it obviously wasn't uppermost in their minds.
I find that at any sort of event the informal shots usually bring out the atmosphere best. I wonder if you would get such natural shots of people enjoying their hobby if you asked them to pose?

I've never really been one for model boats (aircraft man meself...) but those pictures are something special.
Even with the best will in the world, it invariably looks a bit staged and not everyone is comfy with being photographed and knowing it.

Liked the sailing yacht Michael. Always liked a bit of dinghy sailing myself (as well as 250,000 ton supertankers). While we never hit anything in the supertankers, I wish I could say the same thing of the dinghies. But radio-controlled ones - mmmh! There's a thought!

Thanks everyone for taking a look, and for your comments. Maybe you're right, posed pictures would look stiff. I was just thinking, what would I do differently next time? This was pretty successful for me, compared to the dog show I tried to photograph!
