This is the newly opened extension to Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum. It is called The Crystal. It is quite controversial. I have only seen it twice but I think it grows on you. (Okay. On me.) The colours seem to change with the point of view and the time of day. These were taken just before sunrise. Mickey Pentax K100D 18<55mm kit lens. Facing west. The original ROM is in front of The Crystal. Facing east. For scale note the figure in the lower left corner.

It may look even better when they get the wreckage of the alien spaceship cleaned up. It is interesting though. I still think if the ROM were a human the doctor would want that growth removed.

Thanks for posting these, Mickey. I haven't seen it in awhile. I'm one of the ones who like it -- a bold, exciting piece of architecture for the city to enjoy.
I worked at the ROM for many years and am still a research associate there. I was actually thinking of going to visit tomorrow -- I have a badge that lets me in the 'back door'. I was in Alaska when they had the public opening for the new space.

It certainly is an interesting building. I can't say that Bob and Rachel are off the mark in their assessments, but it is kind of neat..........

Sorry, Mickey and Gene.
Bold? Exciting?
I think it's hideous.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. All that's missing is the girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Nicely taken pictures, though.

100 years from now you critics will be saying about it "I love those old buildings."
"I think it's hideous." "I can't say that Bob and Rachel are off the mark ...." Neither can I.
But .... Meanwhile, I am reserving my judgement. I am kind of slow at accepting new things so I had best keep mum for now. After a few more visits and after I see if the inside fits into the outside, and after I consult with my favourite mummy who must live there, well then maybe...............

You are right Mickey, it will take some time to get used to it. It is just that it is so jarring on first sight.

My 15 year old daughter (far more artistically gifted than I) 'likes it a lot': Maybe 'M-M-M-My Generation' is a better theme song! Me? I love it, but I'm probably just trying to prove how hip, young & artistic I am (which using the word 'hip' undoubtedly undermines)

It seems like the same controversy that surrounded the "glass pyramid" addition to the Louvre (always famous, and made infamous by "The DaVinci Code" book and movie). I didn't care for it much when it was first constructed...but I have to admit, I rather like it, now that my "sensibilities" have had time to adjust.

The Louvre glass pyramid looked out of place to me but I saw it while walking past rapidly during a rain storm so I didn't really get the best look.
