In most case, the first two digits of the serial number will tell you who made a Vivitar lens. There is a list of makers identified by the numbers here: www.cameraquest.com/VivLensManuf.htmWalker

Thanks for that link, Walker. I've bookmarked it. So my Canon-fit Vivitar 80-200 no. 22811xxx was made by Kino/Kiron in November of either 1978 or 1988. It's breech-lock, so possibly it's 1978.

Peter, it seems to me that all third-party Canon FD lenses used the old style breechlock with rotating ring rather than the new style one without rotating ring.
