I have never had any real need to use a fast lens wide open and always feared the lack of DOF when using it so. On a recent holiday I was forced to use the lens wide open having only 100 speed print film in the Kiev 4a. The fear is gone. I just love the way this lens does wide open. The focus in the first photo was on the helos near door frame and in the second on the amphibians door logo. Bob

Hi Bob,
these are again two exciting photos. At least up to this picture size the performance of this lens is pleasing my eyes. Both sharpness and contrast look very good. W.r.t. the application of large apertures I have to admit that I lost far more photos due to shake than due to missing DoF - shake spoils 100% of the pic, narrow DoF often comes out at least satisfactory.
I got a little pleasing however for my MC Rokkor 1.4/50 (which are enormously sharp when stopped down to F/5.6) - sharpness at infinity is poor, while near objects might come out OK. It looks like focal plane curvature is a crucial issue, too...
Best regards Peter

Bob, These make me want to use my 1.5 Sonnar again. I will ... as soon as I've finished the film in the T70, and the one in the Praktica, and the one in the 1930s Leica, and the one in the Dollina, and ... I can't even remember what's already on some of the films.. Sometimes I think I'll never see some of those pictures! PeterW PS I forgot the one in the Retina! PW

I flew a few times in those Bell bubble copters. The vibration was so bad you needed a really fast shutter to have a chance of getting a decent picture.
I'm gonna have to get out my Contax II with the early 1.5 coated Sonnar and exercise it. Pretty spectacular results when you consider they were designed with pencil and paper instead of a computer.

Again thanks guys.
Peter
You are right considering the trade off between narrow DOF and slow shutter speed camera shake. I have to say that camera shake was a concern at 1/10 sec with a 50mm FL. I would never attempt it with an SLR but got away with it with the RF, well almost as I did get atleast one ruined by camera shake at that speed.

I am just gently trying to encourage you to do so.

I am wondering how much more flare resistant the coated version would be. Any thoughts on the matter?
