Does anyone have any info about the COMZ factory? The reason for asking is that I just got a J-3 LTM with the COMZ logo on the beauty ring and noticed the different logo that I had not seen before. My web searches produce very little info on COMZ. Thanks.

Bob, I'm making an assumption here that may not be correct but the logo you speak of probably looks like an eyeball with an arrow through it with the point on the right side. If so, you're looking for ZOMZ.
ZOMZ is the Zagorskii Optiko Mechanicheskii Zavod, a manufacturer that backed up KMZ as a maker of military goods. In addition to the Jupiter-3, they also turned out the Orion-15 28mm f/6 lens, the Mir-1 37mm f/2.8 lens and the Tair 300mm f/4.5 lens.
Located 70 Km North of Moscow in the city of Zagorsk, little else is known about ZOMZ.
I have an absolutely mint J-3 from ZOMZ in it's original bakelite box and an Orion-15 that's also mint and in it's original container. My J-3 is in Kiev mount which Princelle's book calls "rather rare" while the M39 version is merely "uncommon". My Orion-15 is in M39 mount and also marked as "uncommon".
Compared to other former USSR lenses I have, the ZOMZ-made lenses appear to be of slightly higher quality than most.
A best guess on date of manufacture is early to mid-1960's. The J-3 was also made by a company recently identified as "Optek" and their logo is a three element lens group. The third maker of the J-3, and apparently the most commonly encountered, was KMZ, located in Kraznogorsk.

Pinning down factory logos for FSU gear can be interesting. The logo on mine appears to be the three element lens group one you mentioned. Somebody on another forum mentioned that they though it was a pre 62 logo used by ZOMZ. I really should post a photo of it but I.m just lazy at the moment from a cold.

Bob Bob, sorry to learn of your cold and I hope it gets better. The "Optek" logo seems to be about all that is known. The example shown in Princelle's book is from 1956 and it's an M39 Leica mount lens. Princelle says that he found the logo identified in a September, 2001 issue of the RCCC bulletin. That's the "Russian Camera Collector's Club" of the UK. No other information is given. Walker
