When your lawnmower finally curls up it's toes, what kind of replacement do you get? The most powerful one you can get your hands on right? Mmmmm... Maybe not such a good idea.
I was mowing our back lawn (giving it 'the last cut before winter' for the fourth time this year), when it threw out a pebble. I heard a 'crack' behind me, so stopped the mower and turned around. My wife sat with her back to me, so I tapped her on the shoulder, pointed at the french window, and said "I don't think that's supposed to happen".
As we watched, what started out as a mark on the outside of the left hand door gradually crazed the whole pane of glass - all the time making little tinkly cracking noises exactly like breaking ice on a pond. We both watched with amazement at what is going to cost the insurance company quite a lot of money (and myself quite a lot of excess).
Strangely, the whole effect is quite beautiful. I of course dived for my camera (confirming once and for all the total inappropriateness of my behaviour in my wife's eyes - although I did belatedly claim that the pictures were for the insurance claim).
Now, six hours later, it's still giving the occasional little crackle. I'll post anything worthwhile, although I don't know how they will turn out. To photograph, it was very, very similar to a spider's web, while at the same time looking similar to frost patterns on a window.
A strange and amazing experience!
Regards - John
