On a whim, I stopped at a pawnshop yesterday. They had just opened a new location and were trying to drum up some interest and cash flow. I spotted this Yashica in the case and asked to examine it. It was marked for sale at $34.99. Everything seemed in working order but I didn't have anywhere near that in my wallet. I said thanks but no thanks. They countered by cutting the price in half! I offered everything I had with me. Five dollars. I left with a Yashica for my collection. I have read that Yashica adopted a different orientation than most others for their M-42 cameras and lenses. I see that other M-42 lenses stop short of 12 o'clock on the Yashica body and the Yashinon lens stops a bit past 12 o'clock on other M-42 bodies. Anyone know the reason for this difference?

Great deal on a really nice looking camera you bought. Looks mint and if it works as well as it looks it should last a lifetime.

At those prices, it looks like you both stole them!
Not being familiar with Yashica...if they are both TL Electro's why are the finishes different, both on the leatherette covering and the metal top plate? And the self-timer levers are in different places on the face....
And, Randy, why is that lens rare...is it the metallic finish, rather a black barrel?

Ron, there are significant differences between the TL Electro and the TL Electro-X. The X has a metal shutter, mirror lock-up and DoF preview/shutter switch just to name the most obvious.

Ron, How many Yashica lenses have you seen in that finish? I've looked all over and it was a first for me. Wasn't the Electro-X made by Konica?

Randy - you're a wicked man!!
The TL-Electro is a lovely camera (I have one in front of me as we speak) Almost bomb-proof, although it does have a cloth shutter, whereas the Electro-X has metal shutter blades The more I have anything to do with Yashicas, the more I like them.
Regards - John

Walker Now that you mention it (and I look a little closer), I can see the "X" -- it looked like a logo of some sort to me at first. Guess I should wear my glasses, eh?! In all honesty Randy, I have not really looked at a lot of Yashica lenses. Got used to saying Mamiya, and Yashica sounded too much like a sneeze. ----- Yashica fans...that was a joke!

Ron, Gesundheidt!
Randy, Those silver Yashinons are very unusual. You're lucky!
I'll echo doubs and John. The TL and TL Electro X are two very different cameras. I have a TL Super which is a variant of Randy's TL Electro. The Super has a conventional match needle meter and mirror lockup with a mechanically timed cloth shutter. The Electro X has a Copal Square shutter that's electronically controlled at least at speeds below 30, perhaps all. I don't know yet.
It's one of the few Copal Square equipped cameras I can think of that has a seperate mirror lock-up. Most Copal equipped cameras raise the mirror at the beginning of the self timer cycle. The Electro X does have a brighter chrome finish than earlier Yashica SLRs I've seen.
Two marques that I wasn't interested in collecting were Yashica and Mamiya. The a friend gave me a Nikkorex F. Now a have a several Mamiyas, only one of them wearing the Mamiya name. Another friend gave me the TL Super. You know how it goes. You can't have just one! What I've found interesting about Yashica is I don't recall ever seeing one private labeled.
A new 544 battery is in it as is a fresh roll of Fujicolor. I'll try to have some photos from it by early next week.
