I went fleamarketing around town today and found a few neat cameras. I probably paid more than I should have, but heck, it was fun. Got my first Zeiss glass too. Contaflex Zeiss Ikon. With 50mm Carl Zeiss Glass. Canon C35. Kuribayashi 35 Petri. This one has minor damage to the front ring, but I think I can fix that later on. It came with a broke Iris, so I fixed that. Works perfectly now.

Nice finds. Judging by your comments on the Petri, I'd guess that you're not averse to a little repair work. Well take it from someone who's had the 'pleasure' of repairing a Contaflex II, DON'T take the Contaflex apart! Sticking your head in an alligator's mouth would probably be more enjoyable than trying to service the works on an early Contaflex. \ Thanks Stephen, I can understand that. After getting into a Minolta Autocord, I don't like them to be too complex, takes too long to get it back together correctly. The Zeiss Ikon Contaflex works amazingly, and also has the cleanest glass i've seen on a camera it's age. No mold or dust on the elements. The Kuribayashi was hard to work on, because the shutter speed control and shutter were the first things needing to be removed, as they were before the iris. They didn't come out easily to say the least. I like to work on cameras, and the logic for me is, the great techs won't be around forever, and my wallet cannot handle sending my broke cameras off. So, for me, fixing them myself is the best option.

Alex
Your hunting instincts are good. I had a Contaflex once and regret not having it now. It was one of my first encounters with an old camera and I remember how amazed I was in the picture quality it could still produce. Enjoy them.

I loved my old Contaflex. Don't think anything I own now exudes the feel of quality like that old Zeiss. It was my first real camera and I learned more about photography from that old beast than all the rest put together! Gave it to my son, and he used it for years. His widow now has it, and it still works. One of these days I'll have another one. Roy
