My girlfriend seems to be a good luck charm at thrift stores. A month or so ago it was a nice Canon AE-1 with Canon Speedlight for a ten spot. Then two weeks ago a Yashica TL Electro X for a fiver. Yesterday we wandered into a Salvation Army Store. I spotted a couple of blue boxes on the checkout counter. Kiron zooms 28-105 and 35-135. Alas, they were in Contax/Yashica mount and of no use to me. Then I checked the bag next to them. It contained a Yashica FX-D Quartz with 50/1.4 and flash. I scooped it up for the asked $25.00 US. Two fresh batteries and it works! Lenses seem good and need only a little cleaning. I know very little about the Yashica/Contax family of cameras. Can you fill me in with your experience and knowledge? Kiron is my favorite 3rd party lens maker and I look forward to using these. Happy shooting!

Another good outing...do you think I might borrow your girlfriend long enough to help me find a Mamiya 645 to ZE adapter?

I would love those lenses! After 120 odd forays into the e-bay circus, something finally got lost (although it was the week following a postal strike). It was a Kenlock 80 - 200mm for my FR-1. But (happy days) I dug out my FX-3 and it had an 80 - 200 original Y/C with it. The Yashica FX's are lovely friendly lightweight cameras. My FX-3 weighs next to nothing and takes beautiful pictures - mainly on the auto setting (!). But this FR-1 means business - everything about it feels right. Only trouble is, I put it in the car and it turns cloudy and misty. Leave it at home and the sun breaks through and a steam train goes past. Aaaaagh!
Regards - John

Regards - John A closer examination shows some white spots on inside elements. Time to ratchet up the courage! I've been impressed by every Kiron zoom I made a picture with and am pleased to have scored these and a camera to use them on. The FX-D feels nice. My hands are most comfortable with the larger, older Canon SLRs like the FTb and EF. This Yashica is a bit smaller than the Canon AE-1 but my hands seem to fit well around it. The Florida environment seems to cause foam seals and leatherette to deteriorate more quickly than other climes. This junior Contax is going to need a bit of attention to make it good looker again. I seem to share your plight, John. Whenever I'm going someplace and don't have a camera with me the Florida East Coast Rwy parades a unit train with two of their new locos past me. When I stake them out at the river crossing with the palm trees in the foreground, I get skunked nine out of ten times! Bill
