Somedays you get the bear, somedays the bear gets you. Just about the perfect shot of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team and I get lightstruck. Difficult to find subdued light in Florida! Kodacolor 400, Vivitar 300/5.5 T4, Canon A-1 Second best. Not lightstruck.

Dang, those are NICE! Better than any I've gotten. That old Viv does a good job. I've got the same lens-gonna get that sucker out and use it! Didn't know the T-birds used 2 place '16s, but I see two of 'em. Thanks for posting. Roy

Thanks, Roy. Luck as much as anything. That came from a four or five shot sequence with the motor. My framing was all over the place!
That old hunk of glass did ok. I came across some shots I did with it at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. They weren't so good, but I recall I had a 2x Converter on it and probably was using it wide open. These were shot at f-8 or 11.

You got some nice photos of the Thunderbirds, sharp and good composition, but were sure robbed on the first one. Roy brought up an interesting point on the use of tandem seat models that I would have missed. I don't recall seeing that before either. Tracking a moving object is a fine art like shooting clays with a shotgun and difficult too.

Bob, A contributor on another forum suggested converting it to black and white, something I hadn't thought of. The streak disappears into the clouds. I cropped a bit, too. I'm happy now! Bill

Bill, that looks much better now the red streak's gone. I also like the crop. It seems to give the picture extra action, maybe because they're now flying into the picture on a diagonal more just hanging in the sky.
Very good tracking shots, really sharp. I don't know if you use a little tip of technique I was shown by a pro who photographed motor cycle racing? The tip was to follow through with the tracking after you press the button instead of bringing the camera to dead stop. This guy was really experienced, and could get pin-sharp tracking pictures on a dull rainy day even at slow shutter speeds like 1/50 sec.
I tried it and found I was getting sharper pictures because I had been tending to stop tracking as I pressed the button instead of after the shutter fired. There was just enough delay to make the planes, cars, bikes etc blurred. I never got nearly as good as he was though.
I haven't tried this with a digital or auto focus camera having a longer 'shutter lag' but I imagine it could make a big difference.
Maybe that's why on older cameras the open wire frame finder was often called a 'sports' finder? You could keep the object in view both before and after taking the shot.

Those are fantastic shots!!! I like the color ones. Man, very impressive work. Those can't be easy to capture.
