Saw this swan and her cygnet on the river today. Papa was following close behind, scattering geese and ducks out of the way. Nikon D300, Tamron AF 28-75/2.8 XR Di Gene

Gene,
Do you remember Danny Kaye's song "There Once Was an Ugly Duckling"? It turned out to be a beautiful swan and this must surely be it. Was ever a subject more suited to black and white?

"There once was an ugly duckling. "With feathers all fuzzy and brown "And the other ducks said in so many words "'Shoo, get out of town!" (or something along that line)
Danny Kaye's "Hans Christian Anderson" was probably my most favorite musical as a kid.
""I sailed away but I'm Home today "Singing Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Copenhagen for me."
Gene: You have a gift.

WOW i cant beleive it....thats what i thought when i first saw the image. the water looks like mercury reflecting every small detail. i had a print scanned recently that looks terrible compared to the print but this picture has so much detail...i can only imagine what it looks like as print....i thought film was meant to better than digital but this makes me wonder..
or perhaps film just doesn't tranfer to computer too well...
either way, as i saying to someone today Gene, you make outstanding pictures everywhere you go...
i'm not going to compete with the poets and ol music score buffs!! i got no chance!

Mickey, Wayne, Andrew, thank you for your generous comments.
Andrew, there are times when I can pull a good B&W from digital, if the lighting is just right, as it was here. But in most cases I get better B&W results with my film cameras. I'm shooting a lot with the D300 right now because it's new, but I know I'll soon start going for walks with my Nikon film bodies, or a Bessa rangefinder, or my TLR.

Hope you do not go the way of most digital imbibers. And continue to shoot and show film results also. There is a lot to say for digital, I admit, but I am still a diehard film guy.
In fact, I have had my digitial SLR for 5 months now, and have not even put any media into it or actually shot a thing. Even though a got a steal on it, it was a waste of money.
Oh, just an added comment...Starbucks is closing 600 company owned locations in the U>S> bu the end of July. People are not paying the higher cost for special brews.

Renaldo, no fear yet of me abandoning film. Not until the day that digital can do B&W equally as well as B&W film, and I honestly have doubts it ever will. I'm planning a B&W film outing this coming week -- with my TLR as my main shooter.
I hadn't heard that about Starbucks. There are so many of them now. My local is always busy so I don't think it'll be closed.
You haven't shot with your DSLR? You should at least try it out. Think of it as digital slide film. Like slide film, it has a compact dynamic range but brilliant colours.
