Which Pentax brand normal lens stands out above the rest? I would appreciate a discussion all your grand, collective experience.

Wow, where to begin? My SMC Takumar 1.8/55 is hard to beat. It's the best "normal" I have in M42. K-Mount? Don't particularly care for my SMC Pentax-A f2/50. That is strictly subjective, because it yields excellent results. It just doesn't "feel" as good as the older lenses. (I know, I'm prejudiced ) I much prefer my SMC Pentax-M 1.7/50mm. That being said however, my personal favorite "normal" K-mount isn't a Pentax at all. It is a beat-up old XR Rikenon f2/50mm. That ol' turkey blows me away every time I use it! Cheers, Roy

Cheers, Roy It's not fast, but I think the Super-Macro Pentax 50/4 is one of the loveliest lenses I've ever used. Gorgeous rendition and OOF characteristics, and great if you do a lot of closeup shooting. The 55/1.8 is legendary as a superb optic. Couldn't agree more on that one. Gene

I have a 50/1.7 marked SMC Pentax - M, serial 6241852. I bought it for the cosina for £15, a cracking lens. Must get a skylight filter for it!

The 55mm f1.8 and the f2 lenses are both very good as is the f1.4. I've always like the Nikon f1.8 and f2 better than the f1.4 Nikkor but the Super Tak f1.4 is, IMO equal in quality to the 1.8 and f2 Taks.

Johnny,
No doubt you're talking about the K-mounts. But as a matter of interest I did a comparison of focussing distances on M42 lenses which included a Takumar, Minolta, and a couple of East German lenses. The conclusion was that the Japanese manufacturers had sacrificed the close focussing properties of their lenses for light gathering power. So it depends what you need...
Don't always assume!
Regards - John
