Can any of our US members do me a favor? (only saying US members as I will ask for item to be overnighted to us)
Sherri needs an AOL 9.0VR disc. The VR stands for Vista Ready.
Sherri's computer bit the dust and has been replaced with a new Dell. The AOL discs we have in the house, are not Vista compatible.
And because we are too remote for DSL and have no cable in this very rural town..we use AOL dial-up and therefore cannot even download AOL from their site.
So, does anyone have that AOL 9.0VR disc? And if so please can you overnight mail it to us. We will gladly pay for the postage. Please PM if you can help.
thanks Bob

Sorry Bob
You seem to be struggling. Why not email AOL? If they won't send you one, just get another ISP.

Hi John Yeah it seems none of our US members care to help. AOL is mailing us a disc.....5 to 10 business days...that's 10-14 days...great! You know..... someone with a high speed connection can go to the AOL site ......to this link: daol.aol.com/software/90vrdownload it for us and overnite it to us---I would paypal them the cost of postage BEFORE they ship it...... but it seems no one wishes to do that....so much for brotherhood of the Camera Collectors.... Ouch!
I'm sure any/all of them would have done that if you'd explained where they need to go and what to do, as you've just done. Sounded as if you were asking for the original disc first time round mate...

John Thanks for your concern and thanks for bringing this back to life . Fact is either the original disc or the downloaded and burned disc would do the trick. Sure would appreciate any help..... Bob

Bob, don't know about anybody else, but I wasn't ignoring you. I am sympathetic to your problem.
I would be afraid to download anything from AOL. AOL software worms its way into every nook and cranny on the hard drive and is a b**ch to get rid of.
I would agree with the recommendation to get another ISP. I ran with Netscape/wal-mart till recently when I was finally able to get a DSL line. They have the discs at their stores and it sets up in a couple of minutes... and it doesn't infect your computer with crap that gums everything up. The only time I had a problem was when Micro Soft updated my software and it had a compatibility issue with Netscape (I've turned the MS auto updates off to stop that sort of thing).. I was given the work-around by Netscape over the phone so I could use the internet for the week or so it took to fix their software.

Orlin
I know what you're talking about. I've a few friends who had terrible trouble trying to get rid of AOL. I suspect Sherri has sites on the AOL system that she needs access to (?). But your concerns wouldn't apply. The package would come as an executable, so when Windows asked you "Do you want to save or run this file?" you would just save it. Then you could copy the saved file onto CD, then delete it from your machine. You'd never have to deal with AOL again!!

Hold it Orlin!
Bob
After I made that last post to Orlin I did a dry run (to make sure I wasn't talking rubbish as normally happens). That file is only 301kB. Do you know if that's all you need or is it going to start downloading gigabytes after that? Because you could download that yourself in a couple of minutes, even on a snail-speed connection...

Well, guys I hate to disagree with ya all..... but if you live in an area where you cannot get DSL or cable--like we do.......AOL is the best dial-up and email service. We have tried several others and sooner or later the ones we have tried, went down...and left us with NO INTERNET. And as far as features, convenience and reliability---again if one is stuck with dial-up---I'll stick with AOL. Now back to the real issue...in a half hour we have already wasted 3 days......will anyone be able to help or do we just wait those 5-10 business days? And a question.....would burning the disc I need......and not downloading it to any drive one has---- just to a disc....would gum up anyone's computer?
thanks anyway Bob

This is going on a bit. Me not thinking quickly enough. I've just sent you that file in an e-mail assuming AOL won't let you download on a slow connection.
Stick it on Sherri's machine and see what happens...

Bob: I tried to download it when you first posted. Keeps giving me a "script error" message and won't download. Just tried again, and same thing. Sorry, should have told you. Roy

Bob: I tried to download it when you first posted. Keeps giving me a "script error" message and won't download. Just tried again, and same thing. Sorry, should have told you. Roy I tried it too, actually from a various places, all links will download a small installer.exe to a computer, 304kb or smthg. When you double-click the installer the actual downloading will start but it doesn't give any option to save. So if you don't have it on a disk it is not easy to download and burn and if it would be possible for me it would take more than a week till you could touch it. In UK they recommend this: If you are connecting to the internet via dial-up modem, downloading AOL 9.0 VR online may take some time. We recommend that you pick up an AOL 9.0 VR CD-ROM from your local Dixons retail outlet. Sorry, Bob

Thanks Reijo
I suspected that might be the case, although I was hoping it might be a patch to allow an XP version of AOL to run on a Vista machine.
So, back to square one Bob - sorry. I'm surprised the CD is so hard to get hold of. Time was when you couldn't open a magazine without a current version AOL CD falling out of it. People used to use them as beer mats!

thank you all for trying to help...much appreciated!
I know that in the past I used to able to pick one up at Walmart---no problem. But when I asked aol if I could pick one up at either WalMart or Best Buy...they said No...we no longer distribute them to our "partner" stores...only can get it by mail or download from site.
but again---thanks for trying Bob
