On a walk the other day, two swans flew by me under the bridge. I saw them coming and quickly grabbed one shot before they whistled by. Nikon D60, Nikon 18-55mm VR

Beautiful, Gene. That's a shot I would not have gotten. Can't focus fast enough. That fast focusing Nikon is made for this! Roy

Wow Gene!
What did you focus on? The DOF is huge (the blurring of the lead bird is obviously due to motion, not focus). Or were you lucky enough to have it in manual at the time?
Sorry I take that back as unworthy - in photography you make your own luck! Good effort!

Roy, John, it was luck, mainly. I saw them coming and just shot, hoping the AF would focus on something. I watched them in the VF until I thought the timing was as optimal as I was going to get. I frankly suspected it would be out of focus and off the mark. I was pleasantly surprised.
The thing, I guess, is always to try. You miss a lot of them, but sometimes they turn out.

Gene, Lovely, the sort of picture I'd love to get, but I'm always just in time to be too late . BTW, I think you forgot and put the pic in here at 1024 pixels wide which means scrolling sideways to see it all. I would have modified it to 800 pixels to save you the bother, but when I looked on your flikr site it was only 500 pixels wide, so I don't know how to do it. Can you pull it down to 800 or slightly less please? Thanks PeterW

Thanks Peter.
I've adjusted the image link so you can click on it to see the 1024 version.

And when they turn out, they add to a splendid repertoire of images. Another very nice one, Gene!

Great shot Gene, I had that happen with some ducks once and I dropped my camera.
