Sara and I took Grandaaughter Grace on an overnight trip to central Idaho so I could shoot some photos of the country where the Nez Perce Indians lived and fought l50 years ago. Please excuse me changing the photos from time to time. I'm trying to recalibrate my monitor. Below are two shots of Tolo Lake on the Camas Prairie where the Nez Perce liked to spend their summers. Carver Creek on the Salmon River. The Nez Perce War of 1877 began here when three young Indian men killed a settler living here. Granddaughter Gracie at the entrance to a trail through the White Bird Battlefield. Clearwater Battlefield near Stites, Idaho. Shot just after sunup on an overcast morning.

In June 1877 Three Nez Perce killed a farmer and his hired hand working in this hayfield above the Salmon River.

Horseshoe Bend of the Salmon River. The Nez Perce crossed the river here and moved into the mountains in the background trying to avoid pursuing troops. I've shown a film version of this previously. In these rocks on a hillside above Cottonwood, Idaho a platoon of soldiers was wiped out in a matter of minutes by the Nez Perce. The platoon was led by a young Lieutenant who had just graduated from West Point and wanted to make a name for himself. His fame was fleeting.

Not Indian War related. Just a shot of icicles formed when the mist from the fast flowing water in a creek, freezes on nearby plants.

Fascinating stuff, Wayne.
Looking at the penultimate photo brings to mind the phrase, "no place to hide"

Fascinating stuff, Wayne. Looking at the penultimate photo brings to mind the phrase, "no place to hide" Pretty much how the doomed troopers felt, I'm sure. Nothing in the photo to put the rocks in perspective, but they all are less than waist high. And I will admit I had to look up "penultimate." Wayne

Ouch!
We have Pakistanis, Indians and Eastern Europeans 'movin' us off our land'. On the whole we quite like them!
