Ron--it appears you were right on. I have done what you suggested and now it seems things are working much better. And yes, I believe it was continuing with the already begun updates even though I had turned the auto updates off.

Regardless of the operating system...investing in a utility software prgm will be beneficial to your peace of mind. I use Tuneup Utilities(German co.), Fresh Diagnose (free)...they allow you to see what programs are currently running system-wide at the root level. Also, using firewall and anti-virus prgms with a simpler, smaller footprint will keep your memory/ cpu usage lower.
Been finding simpler, smaller ways to protect my system for 25 years..with good results..
