Hi Folks
Can someone who is somewhat computer savy lend a hand? It would be much appreciated. Living in a rural area where one is too far away from Hi-Speed thru the phone co. and your town does not have cable---really makes life difficult. So, stuck with dial-up service for our desktop, it really slows down to a walk when this little yellow shield with an exclamation point in it is visible in the right side of my bottom bar. If I hold the cursor over it, it says "Downloading updates". I thought it was Windows Defender so I turned that off.....it still runs...thought it was Microsoft updates so I went into the registry and stopped it from updating...still it runs. What the heck is it? And how do I turn it off?
thanks much Bob

Go to your control panel, and click on updates, it should tell you what's updating. My major hurdle is Google Chrome.

Hi Randy
Thanks for the attempt---tried it---didn't seem to tell me anything. The Operating system is Windows XP.

I'm trying to remember with XP. .. I think in Internet Explorer you can go to tools- - - select windows update, There should be an option there to turn off automatic updates.
People with dial up really have problems now because such a high percentage of users have faster service, all the websites are more complicated and have more stuff that has to be downloaded

Randy, As someone who has just spent almost three hours unsuccessfully trying to get my computer to do a simple task I can recommend a very heavy sledgehammer. Mickey

Bob -- Do you have a virus protection program? Things like McAfee or Spysweeper also have auto downloads available. You have to change the sweep settings within the programs, and can have them set for the middle of the night (if your computer is always on, like mine is), or have them prompt you before starting.

Since I'm no techno mage, I simply typed in "yellow shield icon-what is it" in the search on Dogpile (I hate Google's results display). Almost all answers on every tech forum say that it is Microsoft's Windows Update. Maybe yours is set to automatically update and could be changed to update when you're not on the computer?

If it's just windows updates, you can turn it off.

Thanks everyone! Seems Curt is right...it is windows updates.....and I did turn it off but I suspect the changes do not take full effect till I turn off and restart, which I will do now.
thanks again Bob

Would you believe that darn yellow shield is still updating even after turning off the updates and restarting my computer! Amazing!

That's your Windows Defender, you can turn it off too.

This morning out of the blue.....a box popped up called Update Manager. I turned the options off for all the automatic updates and so far it seems to have done it...we'll see---LOL.

Bob -
I feel a little silly not have identified what was going on in your original post. My computer is almost always on, and I don't have many "back-ups" of non-loaded updates.
I also have Windows Update set not to automatically update, but to notify me when updates are available. So I never see an announcement of things being downloaded unless I have initiated it. That way I can pick and choose when (and what) to download.
I only download the "critical" updates, which is always a good idea.
And you're right. The updates only take effect after you restart. But your computer was probably already downloading updates when you turned the Update off.
It would have continued until those updates that had already commenced had been completed. That's likely why it still seemed to be operating after you restarted -- because it was!
I suspect you're not having that issue now. But I would still set it to "notify me" instead of turning it off entirely.
