In 1957 / 8 , at the very beginning of production , Arsenal issued a Kiev 4 with no strenghthening ridges to the cover over the meter , a precise copy of the Contax IIIa meter cover . This plain cover dinted easily , so it was quickly modified to the version seen right through to the end . Another advantage of Kiev cameras in these early years is that quality of engineering , engraving , chrome etc remains high - it is obvious that the Arsenal Engineers were proud of their update , though demands for productivity soon betrayed their intentions . dee

There was an early "No Name" Kiev, allegedly made for export. There is no name on the front of the camera. Allegedly near Contax in quality. Supposedly used some German manufactured parts.
Some of the last Kievs were so poorly made they hauled them right from the factory to the landfill!

The ' no name ' Kiev 4a was a 1962/3 issue for the USA market - when quality was still OK . At the height of the Cold War and Commie fears , a Russian camera would not be acceptable .
