Hi ! I rediscovered this unknown large and heavy Leitz device ( 1930`s ? ) from my basement last week. A friend gave it to me for free about twenty years ago. Since then I did not found out the purpose of this apparatus. At the front end is a 40W lightning bulb attached, the center section can be opened to insert something ( a sample ? ) and you can look through lenses at the back part. There is a adjustable scale at the right ocular ( last picture ). A friend told me that this could be a refractometer or a polarimeter. I don’t know anything about this item, but I saved it from scrapping. I am very interested in your opinion ! MIK

I have looked at various optical instruments from different manufacturers, but I still have come up with a really close match. From what I have seen it looks most like a polarimeter.

I know virtually nothing about optical devices so take this for what it is worth.
Could it be a device for comparing two halves of a split cylinder such as a miner's drill core or ice core or popsicle?
