Made a 500-mile round trip last week to visit the City of Rocks in central southern Idaho. The area is now a federally protected Park. Our campsite was a 5,600 feet altitude. Shot with Nikon D300 and 18-200mm lens. Wagons similar to this one passed through the area 160 years ago carrying fortun seekers to the California gold fields. The California Trail once climbed this draw from the desert basin in the background. Pioneers thought the rocks resembled the ruins of a city. The City of Rocks draws rock climbers from all over the world. On the day we were there, I estimate there were 500 climbers in the area. The travelers put names and dates of their visits on Registration Rock, writing with axle grease. Ruins of a ranch house from the lat 19th Century The Sisters

Wayne, Those are beautiful photos, thanks for posting them. I loved the time that I was stationed out west and would move there in a heartbeat if I could Doug

Nice pics, but I'll bet there's rattle snakes there.

Randy:
Actually there are few if any rattlers where the rock formations are located. Most of the area is at an altitude of 5,500 to almost 7,000 feet. Too high for snakes.

Wayne,
Another most interesting set: thanks for letting us see them. One always sees the log cabins and wooden buildings in films, so it is different to see a ranch house that was built with stone. There are trees around, but presumably not the best type for building use. Plenty of stones around too, of course. A fair time must have been spent building the ranch: the stones appear to be dressed on all sides.

The ranch house was finished in 1910 and burned in the 1960s. There were a number of ranches in the area in the late 19th century but in the 1920s, the area water table dropped, making most of the wells go dry and most of the people left.
There was a stage station nearby in the 1870s but it was made of logs.

Who would have thought Wayne? I guess first impressions aren't always right. I know in Colorado the crawlies like places like that.
