Although dwarfed by the still-unfolding horror which has befallen Japan, the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February continues to reverberate with those of us who have lived in the city.
These few photos, taken over the past few years, were of the city I was born in, and which is now altered forever.
Punter on the Avon.
ENNA Tele-Ennalyt 135/3.5 on a Braun Super Paxette BL
This business was owned by a friend of mine. He recently sold all his shares to a large tourism company. The earthquake has forced its closure.
Food Stalls
Staeble BRAUN Color-Ultralit 50/2.8
These stalls are part of the Art Centre Market. The Art Centre (the Old University), a Neo Gothic complex int he 'Historic Precinct' has been seriously damaged.
Cloisters in the main quad
Color-Ultralit
A popular site for lunch.
My wife's English students.
Staeble BRAUN Katagon 50/2.8
The 'young' students doing exercises before class.
Most of the Chinese community live in the west of Christchurch, less affected by the quake than the east.
St Ninian's
Katagon
I don't know whether this church survived. It is of the type which suffered the most damage, but it is situated well out west, so who knows?
Central City
Katagon
I fear that this was likely destroyed. It is still in the Red (no go) zone.
Sumner, the city and the Torlesse Ranges
Olympus compact digital.
Sumner was a hard-hit suburb, close to the epicentre.
Shag rock, in the middle of the picture, has crumbled.
The eternal has suddenly proved not so.
Rangiora Town Hall
Minolta Hi-matic 7
Where I watched movies as a kid, sang in school plays and watched my daughter sing in school plays.
It was damaged in the September Quake.
It is the type of building which will be carefully scrutinized after 22 February's collapses.
