Hi, I hadn’t got any pictures that fitted in the ABC of the competition- well, not without stretching the description - so I thought I’d post a few pictures of big English sports cars from the 1930s in the Trains, Planes and Automobiles section. This was the era in which I grew up, and I still remember the “Cor!” feeling whenever one of us small boys spotted one of these, very few and far between. To our minds this is what big sports cars should look like. Younger people probably prefer the look of the much later sports cars that compete at Le Mans and other circuits. Anyway, here’s a sample. Unfortunately none of them ever belonged to me, but at least I got a chance to drive them in the 1980s, and they still evoked the same “Cor!” feeling. Pictures taken on Fujichrome 200 witha Hasselblad and Flektogon lens. Hope you enjoy them. 1935 Alvis The long, low and massive Daimler Double-Six Invicta from the early 1930s, a marriage of English chassis and American engine Lagonda from 1931. PeterW

PeterW,
They are, all of them, works of artists.
I was going to post some photos I took yesterday at a airplane and car show but now I am thinking twice. Nothing I have compares to your cars and the settings are so beautiful.

They are all works of art but that Daimler Double-Six stopped me in my tracks, just drop dead gorgeous.
Bob
Just had a look at Google and I have to say that the 1932 Daimler Double-Six Sports Saloon looks absolutely sinister in black. It should be mandatory for villains to drive them in movies.

Peter, I like the long hoods of these English 30`s cars. The Double-six is outstanding ! Thanks for showing us these beautiful cars. Just like Mickey I also visited a vintage car and bike show at the weekend and I spotted an Alvis at the visitor`s car park. Does Lagonda still exist ? I remember an unusually styled Aston Martin named Lagonda in the 1980`s. Did they buy the brand ?

MIK,
Aston Martin bought Lagonda in about 1947 and has used the name only for a few very advanced - and very expensive - cars. At one time only Rolls-Royce and Bentley produced cars with a higher price tag.
For the past 20 years Aston Martin has had a number of owners including at one time Ford, but is now owned by an international consortium.
Last month the company anounced it will be producing several new Lagonda models either later this year or in 2012.
