The joys of FSU gear. I don't know if you have this site book marked www3.telus.net/public/rpnchbck/ but it is pretty good for fixing an ailing Kiev. They are surprisingly smooth when worked on. Bob

Col,
Sorry to hear about the Kiev shutter. As you say, there's always a but with ebay.
I don't know how adept you are at camera tinkering but if you decide to strip it down and find the shutter beyond repair I've got a complete shutter assembly from a bent Kiev I stripped some time ago.
I've no idea if it works, but the curtains seem in good condition.
My arthritis won't let me do any tinkering these days, so if you need it drop me a PM with your home address and I'll wrap it up and post it to you ... gratis.

"It's in plain sight." maybe for some people.
Bob thanks for the extra links.

Work on the repair has started.. using one of the on-line fix-it sites for reference.. so far so good.
From what I have been told the camera has had just one owner..used a few time when new.. then spent the rest of the time in a draw for the next 30 odd years.
at first glance the condition looks fantastic.. but now I have started working on it.. I don't think this is the first time the back has been off..3 things I have noticed so far.
1 one of the screws that hold the cover plate is under another part..it looks like it has been remove because some of the metal body has been scraped away.
2 reading the on-line info .. in the final stage removing the shutter box you will find a small shim I found 2 shims floating around in the top cover..
3 one of the small screws that hold the flash cable cover in place is missing.

Col, it's interesting to see how it goes. In terms of sending a p.m. if you click a person's name a page will come up with that person's "Bio". At the top is a "send personal message" menu heading.
Good luck!

Col, When you said the top curtain roller was jammed I knew it rang a bell from a long time ago but couldn't place it. However, I've since found a couple pictures I took of what was causing the problem - a corroded bush. It took a long time to get it free, but eventually it came out. Here's what I found: And this is where it lives I'm not saying this is your problem, but it might be worth investigating. One more tip: If you have to dismantle the train of gears from the wind-on knob to the shutter, set the shutter on a speed you'll remember and mark the engaging teeth. If you don't, the bottom curtain roller stops part of the way up. You can spend a few happy hours trial and error getting them right. Regards PeterW

I know most things are built with cost in mind, but sometimes I do wonder if manufacturers give any thought at all to the metals and other materials being used. I sometimes get the impression that the mantra is "it's cheap it will do as long as it sees out the guarantee". It always annoys me when an otherwise well built machine fails because of one poorly made component.

Peter it look like you may have hit the nail on the head that little gear is frozen solid

it looks like cogs A & B are frozen ..C is okay It looks like I start by removing the film advance drive .. starting with the screw at the very bottom. Note If I do fix it.. I may still have problems .. when the camera arrived the shutter speed ring was jammed on B and not sitting flat
