No, he didn't have to double clutch. The gear box was synchronized.
When the Land Rovers first showed up in the States there were popular but too expensive for most people. They were famous for their durability and I suspect the aluminum body played a part in that.
One of the funniest movies I have ever seen was one from the early 1980s called "The Gods Must be Crazy." An African Bushman finds a Coke bottle thrown from a passing plane and thinks it's a gift from the gods. Anyway, in one scene a guy in a Land Rover is trying to use his winch to pull down a tree and instead the Land Rover winds up in the top of the tree!
