Hi All! On the way back from one of the local parks, I thought I'd stop and get a shot of the area I live in. It's very green around here, and we've got a lot of lakes and rivers. Our town, Port Crane, is situated just about where the Highway bends to the left in the bottom third of the photo, near the middle. You can't see it because there's a lot of trees, and it's very small Doug

Something in your photo reminds me of some of the topography around here. I think it it is the hill/mountains. Were these the result of glaciers grinding down the hills as they receded at the end of the last ice age? I don't mean to imply you are that old though.

Well, lets put it another way, is your area of New York State considered part of the Adirondacks? Dirt is about one minute older than me or at least on some days it seems that way.

Hi Bob! We are actually in an area that borders the Adirondacks to the north-east, the Catskills to the east, the Blue Ridge mtns. directly south and the Finger Lakes just to the north-west. The Susquehanna River runs right through the county, as does the Chenango and the Delaware. The hills were indeed covered by glaciers and ground down. It really is a beautiful area! It's also within an hours' drive of Cooperstown and the Leatherstocking country where all of James Fenimore Coopers' stories take place.

Doug
Well that explains why the topography looks familiar, a good part of our are looks similar for the same reasons. I did a little research and found that the Adirondacks are an extension of the Canadian Shield/Precambrian Shield formation. I did not realize that the Shield extended that far south, we are in that too up here. Yea, it is a beautiful looking area.

Here we know James Fenimore Cooper almost solely for The Last Of The Mohicans.

I understand that the Precambrian Shield is the remnant of the world's oldest mountain range.
Its exposed rocks can be very beautiful from sparkling white quartz to pink granite, orange, black, grey and green. The colours are at their best when the rocks are wet.

Mickey, As a child, we used to vacation with my Grandfather, who loved the country around Perth, Ontario. I can still remember my mother looking for "pretty rocks" up there, and always bringing a few home to put in her garden. Didon, I always look for the positive in things, no matter where I am. A lot of folks would say that there's nothing to do around here, the taxes are too high, the weather is unstable, etc. I like it because it's quiet, and easy to get away from the noise and commotion of the city. Our closest city, Binghamton,New York, is small and only a 20 minute drive from where I live. Sometimes I think that is too close I took some photos at an ice fishing derby last year (they're on here somewhere). My film camera froze up, the digital didn't. Doug
