Hi !
I found some rare KMZ ( Krasnogorski Mekhanicheski Zavod / located north of Moscow ) Zenit stuff at a large annual flea market last Sunday. Although I promised myself not to purchase every bargain I come around, I could not resist to invest 50 Euros in a working Zenit 1 from 1955 in mint condition. It has a Industar-22 1:3.5/5cm lens and the body almost looks like a Zorki 1. 39.000 units had been manufactured from 1952 to 1956. Very few for a Russian camera.
I already have a Zenit-C (S) from 1957 in my collection. It is quite the same model, but with flash synchronization and modified exposure times dial. It is equipped with a Industar-50 1:3.5/5cm. About 230.000 had been made from 1955 to 1961.
The next one looks like an old Russian truck: The Kristall from 1962 is basically a Zenit 3 with a different housing top. Russian people did not like the design ( I do ! ), therefore this model had been produced only for two years. Paid 25.-
And for 20.- a almost new Jupiter 37A 3.5/135 lens with Olympic Games engraving, which fits perfectly my 1980`s Zenit TTL.
And finally another heavy SLR, called “Start” manufactured for the professional market by KMZ from 1958 to 1964. The lens is a Helios-44 2/55. People called it “ The Russian T-34 tank”.
I took a lot of pictures with Zenit-cameras in the 1980`s, even in Moscow. Here is an example ( copied from a slide ) The small car on the right is from the US-embassy .
