Went camping last week and among other things saw the Balanced Rock in southwest Idaho. The top portion of the rock is about 10 meters tall. The one photo with our granddaughter in foreground gives a little better perspective.

Reminds me of The Toad Rock at Tunbridge Wells in Kent, the picture is an old postcard issued at the nearby Sub Post Office. The rock did once fall, in Victorian times, but as some Soldiers were responsible, the Royal Engineers put it back. It used to rock slightly at one time, with light pushes, but after replacement, it is fixed in one position. Modern view of the rock, the trees etc have grown, and sand removed around the bases. I'm amazed that our rock is still standing since it is in an isolated area where it could easily be destroyed by drunken morons.

I am afraid the reason the Rusthall Village Toad Rock fell was drink, if you turnaround from the Toad Rock there is the local Inn right opposite over the road, it was a tourist trap even 150 years ago. The Soldiers tried to get the toad to rock but were too enthusiastic and it fell off the base. It is not glued or cemented back, but rested as before, but the movement had vanished. A steam crane was used to raise it on a tri-legged wooden frame set up by the local Royal Engineers, there used to be a photo of the work, but not on the net.

Shows the view away from the rock, the "Toad Rock Retreat" is opposite. This purports to show an old view of the Toad Rock, but there a buildings near it and the rock is different, which was once taken as evidence the modern appearance is man made, but in fact the image is of an unknown rock, and Toad Rock is natural. We used to play there as kids, in the 1950's there was no fence and you could climb easily to the top. Relatives lived a few doors away in the village. The reason I posted these is to show how biased a shot can be, different views show completely different aspects. Stephen.

At Chiddingstone in Kent another balanced stone, "The Chidding Stone", once it rocked, but it is chocked up to stop it these days. It was rumoured to be used for "Chidding" women, public humiliation as a punishment, in the middle ages!!!... but it seems the name is even older, as is the Stone, at 135million years old.

Hi ! Some beautiful pictures and amazing stones guys ! We have a region here in northern Austria where you can find numerous of balanced rocks, which are results from the last ice age. Some of them could be moved by one man, thats why we call them "Wobbling Stones" ( I hope this is a useful translation ). I visited that region last summer, here are some pictures from Gmuend and Heidenreichstein in Lower Austria: MIK
