Roy,
Fear not the revenge of the Film Film Fanatics. Theirs is a losing cause. They will not be forgotten, always revered, but never again called upon to perform.
Once you look upon your first Photoshopped masterpiece and realize that it only took 8 minutes to produce instead of 2.6 hours and that you don't smell like a fish and chip shop, any qualms you may have will vanish in one one thousandth of a second or less. And your cost per photo will change from $'s to ยข's as a reward for your courageous move.

I'm with the grieving community ... okay, just kidding. I use digital cameras as well, not for "serious photography" though, but for snapshots along the way. Your film cameras will forgive you

It was a combination of things. I really wanted a Pentax, but to get the feature set I wanted, the prices on Pentax cameras were going too high. I was out bid on several. With the Canon, I already had an AF lens from my film Rebel, and with a couple of inexpensive adapters, I can use the batch of M-42 and K-mount lenses I own. Last but not least, I got a heckuva deal on a body in very nice condition. I did a lot of research prior to making the decision, and this camera seemed to be the best fit at this time.
It will never replace my film cameras in my affections, but the hit that my wallet took when I picked up 17 rolls of film from the processor (after my stay with my daughter and grand-daughter, and two days at an airshow) was the final straw.

I'd be interested in your m42 experience. I want to try some FDs on mine too. I started with an XTi, then wondered just how good the previous model was, so I just got an XT 350. I like to compare. the digitals are great for lens comparison. Instant results. let us know about the adpter results.

Congratulations. I think you'll like the 20D, Almost went for one when I was looking for my first DSLR. In the long run it's probably a better route than the Pentax. There's no shame. Enjoy. It's hard to beat instant gratification.

Well, it has been quite a saga, but the 20D arrived today, and I have been playing with it for about an hour. So far, everything appears to be working perfectly.
I purchased it from a long-time E-bay seller. After it was shipped, I discovered that PayPal had picked up my daughter's old address in Las Vegas, and listed it as the shipping address. Apparently, if one does not designate a default shipping address, PayPal uses the last address one used. There is the opportunity to review the shipping address, but ol' Dumb--s here didn't do that. Through modern technology and the tracking number, the Post Office was able to intercept the camera and forward it to Kim's new address in Vegas, from where she sent it on to me. All's well, right?
WRONG!
Somewhere along the line, the postal gremlins struck, and the camera evidently took a heckuva knock. Something heavy was knocked loose inside the camera, and was clunking around. G-R-R-R-R-R!
Contacted the seller, and he immediately offered a full refund, including shipping! I saw that he had another one listed, and asked if he would consider an exchange. With NO hesitation, he said he would ship a replacement out straight-away. He was as good as his word, and the replacement camera is in even nicer shape cosmetically than the first.
Kinda restored my faith in at least part of humanity!
If any one would like the name of the seller, let me know, and I will PM it to you.

Hang in there Roy, and you should end up with a great addition to your tool set. Digital is good for special events, parades, family get-togethers, all kinds of things. But for those solitary strolls don't be surprised if you find a film camera in your hand!!

I'm still enjoying my Sony Alpha. I like being able to use my Maxxum lenses on it.
