Stephen et al.,
With Java enabled you're (as client) can download and run Java-written programs on your PC, the same with Javascript, although this is an interpreted language- and can be inspected - contrary to Java, which is a program (exe or dll) - which cannot be inspected.
Both can work much faster than the HTML protocol because they can use ftp protocol (or even better TCP/IP or UDP directly) and shorten the total path lenght by skipping the HTML servers (mostly Apache or Microsoft IIS) and talk program-to-program.
Apart from this serious speed advantage they both have one major weakness, your PC might be open for all kind of malware you really don't want, so when you enable your PC this way you should protect yourself with good anti-virus and firewall software.
Just my 2 cents... Hans

Well...... a quick test with Firefox and Java script turned off disables the downloading all together on the new Photobucket!!! So Java must be on, and the only issue left is the ram in the computer slowing things, mine is 8 gig, maybe smaller affects the browser when operating with Java script.
Stephen.

Back on the new version of Photobucket now. Over all the years I've used Photobucket I've found that the upload speed can vary enormously. I have only 3GB of RAM on this PC and a 12Mb/s broadband connection (0.8Mb/s upload speed). Uploading a 5.35 MB image to Photobucket took about a minute a short while ago. Interestingly downloading the image back to my computer produced a 132KB file.
